Frequently Asked Questions
Glossary of Terms on Steve's Airshow World
| Q: Are
airshows safe for spectators? A: YES. This is a sensitive topic following the tragic 2011 season, which featured too many incidents highlighted by the media as well as a freak accident at the Reno Air Races that killed a handful of spectators. Know that there are a lot of rules that emphasize safety for the pilots and the spectators at every airshow and are strictly enforced by the FAA and other federal aviation outlets, depending on the country the show is held. This also includes any and all security restrictions employed at the show site. Did you know that the last time a spectator was killed at an airshow in North America was in the 1950s? That alone should tell you how safe it is to attend an airshow. The most dangerous part of any airshow, regardless of where it is held, is the drive to and from the show site. |
Q: How much do the DVDs cost? Are they expensive? A: Normally, a single-disc DVD will cost $16.05, a two-disc set will cost $21.50, a three-disc set will cost $24, and a four-disc set will cost at least $31. There are exceptions to those prices, and DVDs that fall under the exceptions will have explanations why they will cost more or less, which usually entails the amount of video on the discs. I would consider the prices to be reasonable, especially when compared to similarly-priced disc sets of movies and television shows. I have seen several DVDs being sold for $30 or more that were single-disc sets which featured under an hour of video. Take that into consideration if you think these are unreasonable... By purchasing any DVD, you are contributing to the continued existence of Steve's Airshow World by keeping the website online and with various airshow-related trips and expenses, and I very much appreciate your ongoing and continuing support. |
| Q: Are any of the foreign jet teams touring North
America in 2012? A: As of December 22, 2011, it is unknown if any team will tour North America. If there are any, they will appear on the Jet Team Schedules Page. |
|
| Q: I heard there will not be any more
Air Force demonstrations. True? A: Yes. Starting in 2012, there will no longer be any USAF A-10, F-15E, and F-16 single-ship demonstrations. This is due to cuts in the DOD budget. This will not affect F-22 demonstrations and the Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds will perform a normal number of airshows in 2012 and Air Combat Command has stated interested in sending the F-22 to about twenty show sites (most will be shows that do not have the Thunderbirds, Blue Angels, or Snowbirds). And before you ask, yes, there were T-6A Texan II demonstrations. The last one was in 2006 and there won't be any anytime soon. |
Q: Do you provide DVDs in any
other format? A: They're only DVDs. They're not Blu Ray, VHS, or available as a digital download (for your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad). It should also be noted that each DVD disc is made on a Lightscribe disc. Lightscribe is technology where you can burn an image onto the disc and it will act as the label. The discs cost more but the cost is offset in not using printer ink and not using paper labels for each disc. Extra care is required for each disc as labels do fade over time (a guide is included in each order on how to take care of the discs). |
| Q: And on that
note, what about the Navy and Marine Corps demos? A: You'll still see Hornet and Super Hornet demonstrations, along with Harrier demonstrations and the Blue Angels. The Gladiators of VFA-106 will field F/A-18C and F/A-18F demonstrations while the Flying Eagles of VFA-122 will field F/A-18E and F/A-18F demonstrations on a reduced schedule, like in years past. |
Q: Will you sell DVDs at airshows? A: I won't. It's just another thing I'd have to carry. |
| Q: What is the
status of the QF-4E Phantom and the F-14 Tomcat at airshows in 2012? A: It is unknown if the 82nd Aerial Target Squadron will fly the Phantom in airshows in 2012. The F-14 was retired in 2006. If you want to see any F-14s flying, go to Iran. I don't recommend it... |
Q: How much is shipping and handling? A: The minimum is $6.10. The shipping and handling total will go up as the total of the purchase goes past a certain threshold. Keep in mind that shipping costs go up as the package becomes heavier and heavier - even by the ounce/gram. The shipping and handling costs take into account the cost to ship the order, the packaging, and transit time to the post office. Any increases of the shipping costs will be related to increases in how much the postal service charges to ship items. Shipping to destinations outside of the U.S. will cost significantly more, as it usually does when I ship internationally. It is because of that reason why I recommend that if you want to order some titles, to make one larger order rather than several smaller orders, as you'll save a few dollars on the shipping. The same also applies if you live within the United States. Yes, the shipping rate will go up as the total goes up, but in the long run, you're going to save some money.
|
| Q: What about
participation from other units? And what about C-17 demos? A: I can't speak for them. Because of DOD budget cuts, it is possible that there may or may not be participation in flying displays like you've seen in the past. Regarding the C-17, demonstrations were immediately cut following a crash in Alaska in 2010. It is not known if there will be any C-17 demos in 2012. |
|
| Q: What song is played during the Heritage Flights and
where can I download it? Also, what is the status of the Heritage Flight program? A: The song is called "We Remember" by Dwayne O'Brien. I recommend that you purchase the album it is on because it contains an album full of great aviation songs written and performed by Mr. O'Brien. You can purchase it by clicking here. As of December 22, 2011, it is not available on iTunes. And no, I don't have a place for you to download just the song. The status of the Heritage Flight program is a complicated one. Heritage Flights will continue and from what I understand, will utilize A-10s, F-15Es, and F-16s flown by former demo pilots.
|
Q: What do you use to ship? A: I ship USPS Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation within the United States and USPS Air Mail for international customers. I will do my best to get your order out within a reasonable time - keep in mind that any delays may occur and if that happens, I will kindly let you know. I do not use FedEx or UPS because it is a bit inconvenient to do so, plus the cost of shipping will indeed go up. |
| Q: How many and which airshows will you be attending this
season? A: The answer to both questions can be found by clicking here. |
Q: Where can you ship to? How long will it take to
reach me? A: Right now the only areas I cannot ship to (due to political reasons and the current world situation) are Cuba, Iran, Iraq, and North Korea. Please keep in mind that if you are an international customer, you must add the additional shipping charges to your order, as international shipping costs considerably more than domestic shipping. Domestically, your order, once I send it out, should take about 3-5 days. Canadian orders should take about 5-7 days. All other locations should take a minimum of five days to reach you. The rule of thumb is that the further away you are from New Jersey, the longer it will take for the order to reach you.
|
| Q: How will the high gas prices affect which
shows you're going to attend? A: I am planning the 2012 season with $4.50 a gallon in mind and hope prices don't go beyond that. I can get by with prices sustained around $3 a gallon but once it goes higher, I may make sacrifices. |
|
| Q: How will the ECONOMY affect airshows, and those shows
that you attend? A: Simply put, if I can afford it and get the time off, I will attend. I've got a new outlook for the 2012 season because ACC is cutting support for airshows, it weighs in big on which shows I'd like to cover. I will attend fewer shows as a result, may do only one trip instead of two, but that has yet to be determined. |
Q: What format are the DVDs in? A: The DVDs are formatted to play in DVD players formatted to Region 1, which covers North America. However, if you happen to own a multi-region DVD player, I cannot guarantee that they will play in multi-region DVD players. All of the video is in standard definition. On a wide screen HDTV, it will appear like how every other television show was broadcasted before HDTV became standard. As an update, I have had several orders shipped out to customers in Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, and all have reported no problems with playing the DVDs in their respective players. The video, when viewed on a computer, is sized for 720x480. If you are into technical details, that will be of some help for you. Most of the video inserted onto the DVDs was in the .wmv format, with some MPEGs in some places.
|
| Q: What if it rains? What about the wind? A: A rainy day doesn't mean that there won't be an airshow... if it's pouring out, then yeah - probably nobody will fly, but if it's a drizzle, there will still be airplanes in the air (of course, ceiling and visibility permitted). Regardless of location, I will be at the show site if it rains. However, if it's a beach show, I may decide to stay home. If it's supposed to be a windy day, well, I will be there. The video may not turn out as well as I would like, but at least I'll have some video... |
|
| Q: What are the frequencies that the
Airboss,
the jet teams, the demonstration pilots, and the ground control
use? A: I will NEVER post ANY frequencies on Steve's Airshow World, regardless of who it is for, who uses the frequencies, and anything and everything in between. This is because of safety - if for some reason those frequencies got into the wrong hands, someone could easily transmit on that frequency and jeopardize not only the pilots' safety but also the safety of everyone on the ground. Also, I will not give you any frequencies through e-mail or at an airshow. I'm sorry if that sounds rude but I'm looking out in the best interests of safety. |
Q: How much video is on each DVD? A: It varies, depending on the DVD. Rest assured there will be enough video for you to enjoy. |
| Q: Is there any video on the DVDs that is not seen on Steve's
Airshow World? A: Yes. In fact, there is video on the DVDs that was once seen on Steve's Airshow World in the past, but is no longer available to watch online. Plans for several DVDs include special segments that will be seen only on the DVDs and not on Steve's Airshow World. |
|
| Q: What happens if there is an incident at an airshow
involving aircraft and you captured it on video? A: This is a rather touchy subject, as it depends on the severity of the incident. First and foremost, should the authorities and any other media outlets request video of the incident for news stories and/or investigations, I am required to provide the video (though I keep the master copy) to the said authorities and outlets. Should the incident result in fatalities, serious injuries to any pilots/aircrew/participating individuals, and/or severe damage to the aircraft, I will not share the video online. This is out of respect to the affected parties of the incident. If there are no injuries to any individuals but a lot of damage to the aircraft, I may share the video, but only after consulting with several different airshow professionals for their opinions on whether or not it is appropriate to share the video. Should the incident result in little to no injuries to pilots/aircrew/participating individuals, and/or little damage to the aircraft, I may share the video. |
Q: Can I get the Flag Jump video from the Gathering of
Mustangs and Legends on a DVD? A: Because of legal reasons, I am forbidden from putting that on a DVD and receiving something for it. |
| Q: How valuable are these DVDs? A: I have not been able to determine that just yet. Keep in mind that several DVDs can and will feature aircraft or units that no longer exist, which gives them some sort of historical value. |
|
| Q: How about any sale prices? A: Every once in a while I will run a sale price on at least one title to get rid of excess stock, which was created for an event but not all copies were sold at that time. Once that excess stock is sold, the sale will be over. |
|
| Q: What video camera do you use? A: For all of the videos prior to 2006, I used a Hitachi camera that recorded onto 8mm tapes. From 2006 to the present I have used various Sony cameras. Beginning in 2006 and to the middle of summer 2008, I used a Sony model TRV480. For the remainder of 2008, I used a Sony model HC52. For 2009 and onward (and some exceptions), I have used different Sony cameras but for liability issues I cannot reveal which ones other than that one of them is a CX110. |
Q: Do any DVDs have any free gifts and such? A: Every now and then I will throw in a free gift for some of the DVDs. The gifts are usually things I have picked up at airshows in decent quantities or items that were given to me, and I feel rather than throwing them out or recycling them, they should be included in some of the DVDs. |
| Q: Why does the video from several 2009 shows (and other
later 2009 and early 2010 videos) have pink vertical bars and color distortion? A: The primary video camera I was using had some internal issues that I believe is the result of being out in wet conditions and transporting the camera (in its bag) on a cart rather than carrying it on my shoulder. For the 2010 season, I no longer used that camera for video (it will serve a role for playback for when I'm at home) and got another camera of the same type, which produced the results you saw from April through mid-June 2009. |
Q: How is the video on the DVD compared to what's on Steve's
Airshow World? A: MUCH HIGHER quality. Videos encoded for my YouTube account have been drastically reduced in audio/video quality as they are encoded to reduce download time as much as possible (though recent uploads are the exceptions). There is no pixilation on videos when they are recorded onto DVD.
|
| Q: How soon will you
have the videos up from an airshow you covered? A: It used to be weeks or even a month after but my new equipment I can have video up in less than two weeks! |
Q: Is there a limit as to how many of one DVD I
can purchase? A: The PayPal shopping cart system I use has been designed so that you are allowed to update the quantity of each of the items in your cart. Keep in mind that if you order multiple copies of any DVD, it may take quite some time to actually make the discs. It's a one-person operation over here! |
| Q: Why are all of the videos on YouTube? A: Two reasons - to draw the YouTube audience to Steve's Airshow World, and to save server space on my host. If you have signed up for a YouTube account, it gives you the chance to comment on the videos as well as to subscribe to my channel, which will enable you to see when I upload any new videos. You will also see ALL of my videos on YouTube because of copyright problems and infringement. IF YOU SEE ANY VIDEOS on YouTube that are mine and were not uploaded by me, please send that user a message to take down the video. A "cease and desist" message should do the trick. |
Q: How long does it take to make a DVD? A: As long as I have all of the video ready to go, the time it takes to render, prepare, and burn a new DVD takes anywhere from ninety minutes to as long as ten hours. |
| Q: Can I meet up with you at an airshow? A: The short answer is no. During any given airshow day I am very busy, either running around the static displays before flying starts or when flying has commenced I am filming. Trust me - it's not worth trying to bother me at any time during the show. I don't mean any disrespect, but understand I'm doing so many things and listening to other things at the same time and don't need someone talking to me or trying to get my attention. Remember - the microphone on the camera hears everything. If you have very good hearing and can hear something from afar, the camera's microphone will pick it up. |
Q: What is the music in the root menu on the DVD and
where can I download it? A: To avoid copyright issues with major recording labels and artists, I asked my brother if he could record an original mix that could be played in the background of the root menu. He came up with three different pieces, with the third being the final product and what he thinks should go on the DVDs. I have plans on using each of the pieces on the different DVDs since they all sound the same, except for different instruments being used at different parts. He was able to do this very easily and in such little time because of a small recording studio he had constructed in his home. It doesn't have a title, other than "MenuMix". The newer DVDs (released on or after February 24, 2009) will feature new music that was rendered by Steven Serdikoff of THREEWIRE Media. He was able to do this because of programs in his studio that can recreate the pitch and tone of any instrument you can think of. They are not available for download. |
| Q: I see you're going to the same show I'm
going to. Are you going to offer any advice as to what to do for
that show? A: The best advice I can give you is to go to ASB.TV, go to the Forums, and into the Airshow Previews section. Many forum members have attended certain show sites in the past and are willing to give you any advice on the show site. In addition, if you have a Facebook account, you might stumble upon an Events page for that same show or even the airshow's official Facebook Page. |
|
| Q: Are you affiliated with any airshows or in
the airshow industry? A: No. I do, however, send out some of my work to performers for usage in their promos, website, etc. either by their request or by volunteering my work to them at no charge, as a token of appreciation for their friendship and for what they do. |
Q: Are there any airshow-specific DVDs? A: Yes. Currently there are DVDs for the following show sites' airshows: 2007: Langley AFB, McGuire AFB, NAS Oceana 2008: Quebec, Langley AFB, Rhode Island, NAS Pensacola 2009: Langley AFB, MCAS Miramar, NAS Pensacola, New Garden/Ocean City NJ 2010: TBD 2011: None planned. In addition, you can also get a DVD that includes video from Rotorfests in 2006, 2007, and 2008. |
| Q: Will I get arrested while spotting? A: As long as you respect law enforcement during a questioning, you should be fine. If, when running your name for warrants, they find something outstanding, then yes, you will be arrested. If you do not comply with the orders of law enforcement, then you will obviously be arrested. |
|
| Q: Will I draw suspicion from anyone else
while spotting? A: Most likely. In the post-9/11 world, people who see something they think is suspicious - even if it's the most innocent of activities - will say something and report it to the proper authorities. |
Q: Why not a DVD of every airshow? A: Either the video doesn't look good, the weather sucked, or there wasn't enough video to justify putting together a DVD. |
| Q: Are there any responsibilities for me when I go
spotting? A: ABSOLUTELY - you are an extra set of eyes. Almost all experienced aircraft spotters will keep an eye out on his/her area(s) for almost anything out of the ordinary. This includes, and is not limited to, reporting any and all crimes witnessed, illegal activities (drug deals, observing usage of an illegal substance, illegal dumping, etc.), fights, motor vehicle accidents, reckless endangerment (on the ground, in the air, and on the water), medical emergencies, suspicious individuals, to name a few. |
Q: Do your DVDs take away from the sales of other DVDs
of the same shows? A: Show sites of which I have DVDs available AND which you can buy DVDs from other well-respected videographers may seem to be in competition, but in reality, those other well-respected individuals or companies can and do get video from much different perspectives than I do. I would also buy their copies too, as their works are always top-notch. One of my goals with the airshow videos and the DVDs are to draw a larger crowd to the shows, so in effect, the videos benefit everyone. |
| Q: I was at a general aviation airport and someone told
me not to take photographs of a certain airplane at the airport. Why? A: Most likely, the owner of that airplane does not want the airplane photographed at that time. The majority of the time is because of privacy. To give an example, an incident occurred at a busy general aviation airport where a photographer took several pictures of an airplane that had two well-respected individuals also in the photo holding hands as they were walking away from the airplane. Several days following, the photo was posted online on the photographer's website, and news broke out in tabloids and gossip websites showing the individuals together, illustrating the fact that an affair was going on. There will be times where a specific airplane cannot be photographed at a specific location, but other times, the same airplane can be photographed without any problems. Just know that privacy can be a huge issue. |
Q: What about a DVD for the Gathering of Mustangs and
Legends? A: I was all set to put together a DVD for the Gathering of Mustangs and Legends and even announced on AirShowBuzz.com that I would do so, but was kindly asked by one of the founders of ASB that I should not go forward with selling such a DVD. The person, who I will not mention by name, has stated that the Stallion 51 Corporation has taken steps to make sure that they own the media rights and have the exclusive footage rights for any income that can be made off such a product. I am, however, allowed to freely upload video from the Gathering of Mustangs and Legends onto sites like YouTube, MetaCafe, ASB, etc. Stallion 51 Corporation's rights have the backing of several high profile lawyers who are willing to issue "cease and desist" letters if I decided to go against the ASB founder's wishes. Keep in mind that the unnamed founder is also a very good friend of mine. I have also taken steps to make sure any performances and demonstrations from the Gathering of Mustangs and Legends does not appear on any other DVD. |
| Q: When do you go out spotting? A: I don't like saying when I go spotting at any location because it's a matter of privacy. I don't spot often because of time and money (think tolls and the price of gas). |
Q: What format are the airshow-specific DVDs in? A: The airshow DVDs are formatted so that you don't have to fast forward through certain parts of the show to get to a part you want to see more than any of the other acts. The root menu is designed so that you can view the show act by act, with up to eighteen acts on one DVD (space and time permitting). When one act finishes, the DVD should go to the next act in the list, ordered by how it was added to the DVD. Basically if you are looking for a specific act, the easiest way of finding it is on the root menu. If, during a show, one performer takes off and stages behind the crowd and then another performer takes to the stage, you will not see one long video of the takeoff, performer, then the other performer. Do keep in mind that NOT ALL footage from that airshow is on the DVD, as I can only select at best one (maybe two) of each act to include in the set. Each airshow-specific DVD will contain at least four hours of video and sometimes even more. Any links that do not appear to be active in the airshow video pages could signify that the video you're trying to look for is on that DVD, or any other DVD that I offer. There may be an act or two that is not included because for legal reasons, I am not able to do so. If there was an accident at the show, no matter the outcome, it will not be featured on the DVD. |
| Q: Is spotting illegal? A: No. Aircraft spotting is a hobby, and the activities of which can be as little as just sitting somewhere and watching aircraft to taking pictures/video, logging registrations of aircraft the spotter had seen that day, to listening to operations. None of the said activities are illegal (though law enforcement might want you to think otherwise) and in most cases, regular spotters are actually beneficial. They can act as an additional set of eyes for law enforcement, by helping spot unlawful activity and report incidents (large and small) to the authorities, and in some instances, aid in investigations. For example, aircraft spotters in one country were able to spot an aircraft that was known to be used in smuggling illegal contraband by noting that its registration had been changed illegally. The crew of the aircraft and everyone on board were arrested as a result. Steve's Airshow World, in conjunction with a handful of other websites, is dedicated to enhancing the public's awareness that aircraft spotting is a legal activity and that spotters are beneficial to the airport and its surrounding communities. |
|
| Q: How do I go about getting a ride in a
jet fighter like you have? A: Your best bet is to join your country's armed forces and apply for a position as a pilot. Go through the necessary courses and training (and pass all of the courses and training and medical details with flying colors, no pun intended) and you'll be in the cockpit of the plane you've always wanted to fly, and you'll be living your dream! Outside of that, it is incredibly difficult to get a ride in any military airplane unless you are in some way connected to media, Hollywood, or professional sports. |
Q: Now that you mentioned airshow-specific DVDs, what
about past airshows? A: There are NO PLANS for DVDs of past airshows that I have covered. You will see footage from past shows on many of the DVDs, especially in the aircraft-specific DVDs. |
| Q: Can I download any of your videos to my computer? A: No. Don't even think about uploading elsewhere because it will cost you a LOT of money. |
Q: What qualifies an airshow to have its own DVD set? A: For me to do an airshow DVD set, the weather must be great for the majority of the airshow weekend (windy days ruin video), there must be a lot of video available for me to use, I cannot be all over the place with the video, and have found a prime location to shoot from. |
| Q: I want you to attend a particular airshow. A: By the tone you said that, I'm assuming you're not affiliated with that airshow. Most of the time when I get those e-mails, its for shows that are very far away. One other thing - are you going to cover ALL of my expenses so I can attend that show? Heck, I may want to fly first class too! |
Q: How often are the DVDs in stock? A: I do not keep stock of any DVDs (unless otherwise stated). There is no such thing as being out of stock because I would continuously have to keep stock of every DVD available, and I do not have the space to do so. The closest thing to being out of stock is if a particular title is no longer available. |
| Q: What do you use
to take still photos? A: I've used Canon pocket-sized point & shoot cameras: the Powershot A560 and SX130IS, and I also use my phone. My phone has a 5MP camera on it that can also shoot 720p HD video. |
Q: Why are there so few performers on Pulling Some Gs
and Pulling More Gs? A: There are several reasons: 1. I wanted to include a couple more performers on the DVDs but did not have footage of them that I thought was acceptable for the DVDs. 2. I was unable to get permission for a specific performer or two to appear on the DVDs. This was possibly due to the performer's sponsor's contract, which states that commercial usage of photographs and video for purposes of revenue is strictly forbidden. 3. There was no more room on the DVDs for the performer's routine on the DVDs. Keep in mind that I had to get permission from each of the performers that are featured on Pulling Some Gs to make sure he/she is and would be completely aware that such a DVD is in existence. This was done to protect myself as well as the featured performer, as well as to make sure I would not be violating any copyrights and any such legal matter. Each performer gave me their personal approval for their appearance, whether it be in e-mail or by word of mouth. As a return for their kind gesture, each performer will receive a copy of Pulling Some Gs and Pulling More Gs for free as a thank you. |
| Q: Are you on Facebook? A: As you can see, there is a Facebook Page for Steve's Airshow World. Use that for news and upcoming items that will appear on Steve's Airshow World. "Like" the page and follow along. I will also post news articles I find interesting as well as other tidbits. As far as friend requests go, I may or may not approve them - it's all up to my discretion. Don't be offended if I don't approve a friend request. If you repeatedly send me friend requests and I ignore them, maybe you'll get the point? |
|
| Q: Will you provide any news on airshows, performers,
and whatnot? A: No, but if you are looking for that, AirShowBuzz.com is your place for all of that. |
Q: Are you planning any documentaries or "specials"? A: There are some ideas in the works and are very much possible, but nothing has been put forth just yet. |
| Q: Are you going to be adding any new sections to
Steve's Airshow World? A: Anything's possible... but as of right now nothing new has been planned. |
Q: Why does the 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 video look "cleaner" than
anything before 2006? A: I bought a new video camera in January of 2006, which produces video in digital quality versus the analog video from 2000-2005. The video is still in excellent condition regardless of when it was taken. I also invested in a smaller video camera in 2008 that takes very good video, but is ineffective for airshows, especially in the cooler temperatures and when it's windy. |
| Q: Are you going to have any t-shirts for sale? A: Anything is possible there. They will not be "logo shirts" but aviation related shirts. |
|
| Q: What about an "About Me" section? There was one
on here not too long ago... A: There is an "About the site" section on the Facebook Fan Page. |
Q: I have an idea for a new DVD you could produce... A: I want to hear about it! E-mail me with your idea and I will seriously consider it. Be specific with it, not just "oh you should do a DVD on quiet airplanes". Keep in mind that I cannot use video from the Gathering of Mustangs and Legends due to legal reasons. Also, keep your idea within any video from 2006 up to today, as it will be much easier to encode those years' videos. |
| Q: What browser and resolution should I use to
view Steve's Airshow World properly? A: The latest version of Mozilla Firefox with your screen resolution set at 1024x768 or larger. |
Q: Do you have any prints for sale? A: No. There were about 45 different prints that were available but because of low demand, they were discontinued. |
| Q: Why haven't you responded to my e-mail? A: It could be because of several reasons:
|
Q: How should spelling and grammar mistakes be
handled? A: Please e-mail me and specify where on the site you found those spelling and/or grammar mistakes. |
|
Q: How do you handle bad links? What about links to other sites? A: If I don't catch them and you do, e-mail me. I am always looking for more links for the links page. I am trying to have the most comprehensive list of performer links anywhere on the web, as well as links to other photographer's work. Keep in mind that a LOT of the links on the Links Page might be bad. If you find them, let me know. If you are able to provide an updated address, I would really appreciate it! |
|
| Q: Do you run any other websites? A: I used to run The Airport of Game Shows from early 2000 until April 2001. I shut down that site because it was becoming way too much work to keep that site running as well as Steve's Airshow World, which was beginning to get very popular, as well as growing almost exponentially. As of right now, I am only running Steve's Airshow World. |
Q: Why does that header image font look so familiar? A: Because its the same font the USAF uses on their airplanes! Just look at "U.S. Air Force" and the tail codes on the planes and you'll recognize it. For you font geeks out there, the font is AmarilloUSAF. |
| Q: Do you have a mailing list for updates? A: No. It takes too much time for me to write one up and send it out to x recipients. |
Q: There's links on some of the video pages that go
nowhere but return right back to the same page. What gives? A: I occasionally will upload a video page and have it all set up, but not all of the videos have been uploaded. Give me some time and within a few days all of the links will go to the right video. |
| Q: Why are there no videos from the 2005 Thunder Over
the Boardwalk Airshow? A: The 2005 Thunder Over the Boardwalk Airshow presented me with (at the time) the worst situation for shooting video at an airshow. The day of the show started out very windy, with the wind blowing from the ocean, which kicked up spray from the ocean onshore, which required me to clean the lens off practically every minute. The wind also kicked up sand everywhere, making the situation a lot worse, and in turn, you can't hear the airplanes and the public address system over the wind. It just wasn't worth my time to encode and upload anything from that show. There are also a couple airshows that don't have any videos uploaded (mainly from 2003 and 2004) because of bad audio tracking on the original tapes. |
Q: What happened to a lot of the older videos,
especially those of the fighter demonstrations? A: Those that used to have clickable links, but are no longer clickable, signify that the said video appears on one of the Steve's Airshow World DVDs. Trust me - they look A LOT better on the DVD than they do on YouTube. |
| Q: Why are there black bars around the older videos
(2000-2005 in particular)? What about their quality? A: These videos were originally recorded onto 8mm media, which is analog, and have been re-encoded using the new digital video camera, which, of course, is digital. There's nothing I can do about it, but the video is still viewable. The quality stems from the fact that they are analog videos and have had their quality reduced greatly so that I can upload them onto YouTube (don't worry - if they happen to be on DVD, the video on the DVDs look about a million times better!). |

| Q: How are you able to upload videos longer than ten
minutes onto YouTube? A: This is my most frequently asked question on YouTube and I feel I should address it here as well. When I joined YouTube, I applied for the Director Program, which allowed me to upload the longer videos. They approved it, and I started uploading. Recently, they changed that to where any new member who wants to apply as a Director, he/she cannot upload the longer videos. Those who have done so in the past can continue to do so, and I am one of those. It's a huge help for me, since I don't have to upload significant numbers of videos for one subject (I'd rather show a jet team's performance in one video, if at all possible). Nowadays, more and more people have been able to upload longer videos and that is the result of being invited to the YouTube Partner Program. You have to be invited to the program to be able to do so. Please, please, NO QUESTIONS on why you can't upload longer videos... I will not respond. |
Q: There's a mistake on the extended promo... A: I know. I mistyped the address to the Steve's Airshow World Store. However, I took advantage of that. The link I have listed in that video does in fact exist, but it is treated almost as if it is a welcome page to the store. |
| Q: What if my question isn't on here? A: E-mail me! You are also welcome to post questions on the wall of the Facebook Fan Page. |
